Defend Indigenous Rights

Defend Indigenous Rights

Nearly one-third of Colombia's 102 indigenous nations are in danger of extinction because of the U.S.-supported internal armed conflict. In January 2009, Colombia's Constitutional Court issued a ruling, mandating the Colombian government to protect the country's indigenous nations. However, continual assassinations and massacres of indigenous people continue to be the modus operandi in Colombia. One illustrative example was the massacre of 12 Awá people in Nariño in August 2009. Only a couple weeks later, the U.S. Secretary of State certified Colombia in human rights, giving the green light for U.S. military aid to Colombia. Learn more about repeated violations against indigenous peoples in Colombia and take action to denounce ongoing massacres and to lobby for strong international human rights protections.
